What is Giclée?
Many consider giclée printmaking to be the absolute best technology for producing limited editions of original works of art and for printing fine photography. Giclée prints have the appearance and feel of original art. The colors are rich and saturated. Image permanence has been a concern to many artists, collectors and museums. But new technology has improved the giclée process and well-produced giclées are now very stable giving fade and color shift resistance with pigment based inks of over 150 years and dye based inks of over 25 years for average indoor lighting situations. This has given comfort to many major museums that now reproduce their collection masterpieces as giclées. Advantages to the artist are many. Once the art is archived additional pieces, each identical to the other, can be made as needed with minimal cost. The enormous upfront costs of mass production are eliminated and printing is done, as prints are needed. Another advantage is that artwork can be produced in many sizes on various media allowing the artist to customize for specific clients.
